Hichilema promises roads, hospital, airport and faster farmer payments during campaign rally in Choma

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has pledged major infrastructure investments and improved agricultural support for Choma District as he intensified his re-election campaign ahead of the country’s August 13 general election.

In a message shared on his official Facebook page following a campaign engagement in Choma, Southern Province, Hichilema thanked residents for their continued support and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering development.

The President said a re-elected United Party for National Development (UPND) government would prioritise the rehabilitation and construction of both township and rural roads to improve connectivity and stimulate economic growth.

He also pledged to expand educational infrastructure by constructing more schools through the enhanced Constituency Development Fund (CDF), which his government has identified as a key vehicle for local development.

Hichilema said the health sector would remain a priority, promising the construction of additional health facilities alongside the establishment of a Choma General Hospital to improve access to specialised healthcare services.

He further announced plans to build an international airport in Choma, describing the project as part of broader efforts to strengthen transport infrastructure and support economic development in Southern Province.

The President also unveiled plans for the construction of a dual carriageway linking Lusaka and Kazungula, saying the project is intended to improve the movement of people and goods while reducing road traffic accidents along one of Zambia’s busiest transport corridors.

Turning to agriculture, Hichilema said his government recognises the critical role farmers play in Zambia’s economy and remains committed to supporting the sector.

He announced that the government has directed that farmers delivering crops to Food Reserve Agency (FRA) depots should receive payment within three days of delivery.

According to the President, prompt payments will improve farmers’ cash flow, strengthen confidence in government agricultural programmes and encourage increased production.

Hichilema concluded by urging the people of Choma to vote for the UPND in the August 13 elections, arguing that another mandate would enable his administration to continue delivering development while safeguarding peace, security and national stability.

The remarks formed part of the President’s ongoing nationwide campaign as political parties step up their outreach efforts ahead of Zambia’s general election.
