Atupele Muluzi dispels alliance rumours, confirms 2025 Presidential Bid

By Burnett Munthali

United Democratic Front (UDF) President Atupele Muluzi has strongly denied rumours suggesting that his party has entered into an electoral alliance with the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

In an exclusive interview aired on Times Television, Muluzi categorically stated that he has never held any meeting with President Lazarus Chakwera to discuss the possibility of forming a political alliance.

He emphasized that no conversations have taken place between him and Chakwera regarding a potential working relationship or any suggestion that he might become Chakwera’s running mate in the upcoming 2025 elections.

According to Muluzi, the circulating rumours are the work of political propagandists, primarily from the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), aimed at misleading the public and undermining his political credibility.

He noted that such speculations began soon after he publicly declared at the 2024 UDF national convention that the party would not play a subordinate role to any political party in the 2025 general elections.

Muluzi reiterated that the UDF is determined to independently contest in the presidential race and is preparing to field candidates across various levels of the electoral process.

He confirmed his personal commitment to the presidential race by announcing that he will submit his nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) within the official nomination period scheduled from 24th to 30th July, 2025.

With his firm stance against alliances and his declared presidential bid, Muluzi’s position is likely to reshape campaign dynamics and heighten competition ahead of Malawi’s highly anticipated 2025 general elections.
