MDF Urges Caution as Military Training Begins on Chikala Mountain

By Rahim Abdul
The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) has appealed to residents living around Chikala Mountain in Machinga District to remain cautious following the commencement of a military training exercise in the area.
The exercise, which started this week, forms part of the MDF’s routine programmes aimed at strengthening the operational readiness and skills of its soldiers.
In a public statement, MDF spokesperson Major Emmanuel Mlelemba said the training will continue until January 24 next year and should not cause panic among surrounding communities.

Major Mlelemba assured the public that the activities taking place on Chikala Mountain are purely training-related and do not pose any security threat.
He advised people living near the mountain to avoid entering areas marked for military training, noting that unusual movements, sounds, or equipment may be observed during the period.
The MDF spokesperson further warned residents not to touch or pick up any unfamiliar objects that may be seen in or around the training zones.
According to Mlelemba, any suspicious items should be reported immediately to the police or nearest military officers for proper handling.
He added that the Malawi Defence Force has put in place adequate safety measures to ensure civilians, institutions and business operators in the area are protected.
The military has also engaged traditional leaders and other community structures to help spread awareness and ensure cooperation throughout the exercise.
Major Mlelemba thanked chiefs, religious leaders and the general public for their understanding and support, saying their cooperation is vital to the success of the training.
