UDF Pledges Support for Vulnerable Groups in Lead-Up to Malawi Polls

By Jones Gadama
The United Democratic Front (UDF) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting women, the elderly, and people with disabilities as part of its campaign strategy for the upcoming September 16 polls.
UDF President Atupele Muluzi made this pledge after signing the second edition of the Women Manifesto commitment card, presented by the Women Manifesto movement.
This movement is led by organizations advocating for women’s rights, including the Women Legal Resources Centre (WOLREC) and the Gender Coordination Network.

Muluzi emphasized that, if voted into power, his party intends to revive Malawi’s economy, drive innovations, and boost agriculture as key strategies to empower women.
This move is seen as part of the UDF’s broader effort to address the country’s socio-economic challenges.
WOLREC Executive Director Maggie Kathewera Banda welcomed Muluzi’s commitment, stressing the importance of political parties increasing women’s participation in political activities.
She also called for the establishment of political systems that protect the elderly, people with disabilities, and women.
The UDF has become the fifth party to sign this commitment, underscoring its dedication to these vulnerable groups.
This development comes amid ongoing political maneuvering ahead of the September polls, with the UDF exploring potential alliances with like-minded parties to strengthen its position.
