Civil society and DPP reach agreement to suspend demonstrations

By Rahim Abdul
Talks between civil society organizations and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Central Region vice-president Alfred Gangata have resulted in an agreement to suspend planned anti-violence demonstrations in Lilongwe scheduled for Friday.
The decision was made to ensure a peaceful environment for the Malawi School Certificate of Education examinations.

The agreement comes after concerns were raised over the safety and security of citizens, particularly following the incidents of June 26, 2025, where panga-wielding thugs attacked protesters under Citizens for Credible Elections.
Civil society leaders Benedicto Kondowe and Robert Mkwezalamba, who signed the agreement with Gangata, emphasized the need for President Lazarus Chakwera to take decisive action to address the situation.
As part of the resolutions, the President is expected to make a public statement assuring Malawians of their safety and security leading up to the general elections.
Additionally, the Inspector General of Police and the Commander of the Malawi Defence Force are expected to convene a multi-stakeholder meeting to discuss the incidents and strategies for preventing their recurrence.
The agreement highlights the importance of dialogue and cooperation in resolving conflicts and promoting peace and stability in the country.
