MCM praises MISA Malawi’s TikTok training initiative for journalists

By Rahim Abdul
The Media Council of Malawi (MCM) has commended MISA Malawi’s initiative to host a five-day training on TikTok journalism and elections reporting.
The training, scheduled from July 21 to 25 at Mtolankhani House in Lilongwe, aims to equip journalists with the skills needed to combat fake news and reach wider audiences, especially youth, ahead of the upcoming general elections.
MCM Executive Director, Moses Kaufa, expressed admiration for MISA Malawi’s plan, noting that the training will empower journalists to utilize TikTok as a vital platform for information dissemination and combating misinformation.

Kaufa emphasized that the training is particularly crucial in light of the challenges such as fake news and limited digital skills that are prevalent during election periods.
MISA Malawi Chairperson, Golden Matonga, confirmed that the training will enable journalists to leverage platforms like TikTok, which are highly popular among young people, to effectively reach their audiences and counter fake news during election periods.
Matonga highlighted the critical need for the media to adapt to rapidly changing technology to remain relevant and expressed hope that the training would empower media practitioners to engage with new audiences that have traditionally been underserved in their reporting strategies.
The training is being conducted in partnership with DW, Deutsche Welles Center for Education, Knowledge Transfer, and Media Development.
By equipping journalists with the skills to use TikTok effectively, MISA Malawi aims to enhance the quality of election reporting and promote informed public discourse.
