Two Arrested for possession of Cannabis Sativa in Balaka

Police in Balaka district have arrested two individuals, Malita Panyasa, 47, and Daniel Mkwatulo, 35, for allegedly being found in possession of Cannabis Sativa, commonly known as Chamba, without a license.

The arrests were made on the evening of June 19, 2025, at Likudzi and Mkando Trading Centers in the district.

The arrests followed a tip-off from a concerned citizen who reported that the suspects were selling the illicit drug in their shops.


Police detectives from Phalula Police Post, led by Detective Sub-Inspector Andrex Ziba of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs, conducted an investigation that resulted in the arrest of the suspects and the seizure of the drugs.

During the operation, Malita Panyasa was found in possession of 12 twists and loose Cannabis Sativa in her shop without a license, while Daniel Mkwatulo was found with a black plastic bag, a sack of Cannabis Sativa, and 22 twists in his shop without a license.

The suspects, both residents of Balaka district, will be brought before the court once the analysis and confirmation from the research station are completed.
