Lilongwe Police have arrested a 26-year-old security guard, Shadrick Clever, in connection with the gruesome murder of 22-year-old university student Lizzie Nyson, bringing a significant breakthrough in a case that has shocked the nation.

Clever, who had been on the run since the alleged commission of the crime, was apprehended late on April 9, 2026, at around 23:00 hours in Chilipa area in Mangochi District, where he had reportedly been hiding.

Speaking with 247 Malawi News publication, Lilongwe Police Spokesperson Inspector Hastings Chigalu said the arrest followed a well coordinated effort by law enforcement officers.

According to police, the arrest followed a covert operation by a team of detectives who had been tracking the suspect’s movements since the discovery of the victim’s body.

Investigations further revealed that after allegedly committing the crime, Clever robbed Nyson of her cellphone, which he later sold to an unidentified individual. Detectives have since recovered the device as part of ongoing evidence gathering.

Nyson, a third year student at Lake Malawi Anglican University, was found dead on April 3, 2026, in a deeply disturbing state. Her body had been wrapped in a mosquito net and dumped in a nearby bush, approximately 20 metres from the fence of the house where she had been staying with the suspect.

The circumstances surrounding her death have sparked widespread grief and outrage, particularly among fellow students and the wider academic community, who are demanding justice for the young woman.

Police have identified Clever as an employee of Longways Construction Company in Lilongwe. He hails from Kaongo Village under Traditional Authority Kachindamoto in Dedza District.

Authorities say the suspect is expected to appear in court soon to answer charges related to the murder.

Lilongwe Police have since assured the public that they remain committed to ensuring justice is served, emphasizing that investigations will continue until all aspects of the case are fully addressed.

“We would like to assure the public that no stone will be left unturned until justice is served for the brutal murder of the innocent student, Lizzie Nyson,” said Chigalu.

The tragic killing has once again raised concerns over the safety of students in residential areas, with calls for tighter security measures and increased vigilance.
As the case progresses, Malawians will be closely following developments, hoping for swift justice for Nyson and her grieving family.
