The Government of Malawi has made a significant move in the sports sector by appointing Henry Mereka as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the Sports Council of Malawi.
Mereka’s appointment comes at a crucial time for the country’s sports development, and expectations are high for his leadership to drive growth and excellence in Malawian sports.
Prior to this appointment, Mereka had been acting as CEO for three years, showcasing his capabilities and familiarity with the organization’s operations.
The Sports Council of Malawi plays a vital role in promoting and developing sports in the country, and Mereka’s experience will undoubtedly be an asset in steering the council towards achieving its goals.

Mereka’s predecessor, Dr. Henry Mtupanyama Kamata, was appointed as CEO in February 2024 but faced controversy and was eventually dismissed due to allegations of disregarding austerity measures.
The government is confident that Mereka’s leadership will bring stability and progress to the Sports Council, enhancing sporting infrastructure and empowering athletes across the nation.
As the new CEO, Mereka will be tasked with overseeing the implementation of sports development programs and ensuring accountability within the council.
Sources indicate that Mereka’s appointment is part of broader efforts to strengthen sports governance and promote transparency within the Sports Council.
The Malawi National Council of Sports has been undergoing restructuring, and Mereka’s appointment is expected to bring much-needed expertise and leadership to the organization.
