A grouping operating under the banner Citizens for Credible Elections has demanded an apology from former President Lazarus Chakwera over remarks he made during a funeral ceremony held in Malembo on April 6, 2026.
During his address at the ceremony, Chakwera cautioned against being taken for granted, stressing that although he presents himself as calm, he should not be perceived as weak.
The remarks have since sparked mixed reactions among various stakeholders, with some interpreting them as a warning to political opponents, while others view them as inappropriate given the solemn nature of the event.
The grouping’s Co-Chairperson, Edwards Kambanje, has criticized the former president’s statements, arguing that such sentiments risk deepening divisions among Malawians at a time when unity and reconciliation are needed.
Meanwhile, Chakwera’s spokesperson, Gift Nankhuni says the they decide whether to respond to the communications or not.
