Strong winds wreak havoc in Karonga: One injured, several homes damaged

One person has been rushed to Karonga District Hospital, while seven others have been treated as outpatients at Ngana Health Centre after bricks from their houses fell on them due to strong winds, highlighting the severity of the situation.
The strong winds have caused significant damage, with the roofs of several houses and churches blown off, leaving many households in need of immediate assistance.
Harold Mvula, Secretary for the Mwandambo Village Disaster Risk Management Committee, confirmed the extent of the damage, emphasizing the impact on local communities.

Member of Parliament for the area, Mungasulwa Mwambande, has appealed to the government and corporate world to provide humanitarian aid to those affected, underscoring the need for swift support.
District Disaster Risk Management Officer, Humphrey Magalasi, said village disaster risk management committees are on the ground assessing the damage, working to understand the full extent of the devastation.
The strong winds have affected areas under Traditional Authorities Mwakaboko, Kyungu, and Kilipula, causing widespread disruption.
The local authorities are urging residents to exercise caution and are working to provide necessary support to those impacted by the disaster.
