Chitipa taxi drivers urge completion of bus depot amidst growing frustration

By Burnett Munthali

The Chitipa Taxi Drivers Association has expressed concern over delays in completing the district’s bus depot, saying the situation is harming local business, as the current arrangement is no longer sustainable.

The association’s chairperson, Yohane Ng’ambi, made the remarks today during the group’s end-of-year celebration, where he appealed to council authorities to expedite the completion of the project, highlighting the urgency of the matter.

Ng’ambi explained that the taxi rank, which is currently being used as a bus depot, creates challenges for drivers as it has limited operational space to accommodate a large number of vehicles, affecting their daily operations.

The limited space has been a longstanding issue, and drivers are eager for a resolution that will improve their working conditions and boost local business.

On his part, Chitipa District Council chairperson Given Kitha said the council will prioritise completing the bus depot in its next budget allocation, offering some hope for a timely resolution.

Construction of the new bus depot started in 2023 and is yet to be completed, leaving many wondering what has caused the delay and when they can expect a finished project.

The delay has had a ripple effect on local business, with drivers and passengers alike facing difficulties due to the inadequate facilities.
