Maso Awards Choose Guidance Over Withdrawal in Mahempe Controversy

By Rahim Abdul
The Maso Awards organizing committee has announced that it will not revoke the award given to social media personality Mahempe following controversial remarks he made during the awards ceremony.
Mahempe recently came under public criticism after mentioning the country’s President while accepting his Best Content Creator (Male) award, comments which many viewed as disrespectful and inappropriate.
In its response, the Maso Awards committee acknowledged that the remarks did not meet the standards and values upheld by the awards platform.

Despite this, the committee said it considered Mahempe’s public apology as a key factor in handling the matter with restraint rather than punishment.
According to the committee, the comments made by the content creator were in conflict with the guiding principles of the Maso Awards.
A statement released on Monday revealed that the committee convened an emergency meeting to carefully assess the situation and its possible implications.
After deliberations, the committee resolved that withdrawing the award would not be an appropriate or constructive response.
Instead, the committee opted to provide Mahempe with professional guidance aimed at helping him communicate responsibly while safeguarding his creative work.
The committee emphasized that the intention is not to suppress Mahempe’s talent, but to encourage maturity and respect in public engagement.
This guidance process will be implemented in collaboration with the Ministry responsible for Gender and Equality, as part of efforts to promote ethical conduct within the creative industry.
