Prison Service Tightens Security to Curb Illegal Items in Correctional Facilities

By Rahim Abdul

The Malawi Prison Service has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening security measures in all correctional facilities across the country.

The institution says it will not relent in its efforts to curb the presence of prohibited items within prison walls.

According to the Service’s spokesperson, Steve Meke, authorities have intensified monitoring to ensure that prisons remain safe and orderly environments.

He emphasized that the introduction of illegal objects poses serious risks to both inmates and officers.

Meke issued a stern warning to individuals who engage in smuggling items such as knives, razor blades, and other dangerous objects into prisons.

He stressed that those caught will face tough penalties in accordance with the law.

The spokesperson further noted that the act of sneaking prohibited goods into correctional facilities undermines the proper administration of justice.

He said the Service will continue enforcing strict measures to protect all people within the system.

His remarks follow an incident that occurred recently at Zomba Central Prison, where authorities apprehended a woman attempting to sneak in SIM cards.

The SIM cards were reportedly meant to aid some inmates in illegal communication.

Prison officials say the woman’s arrest demonstrates the ongoing challenges they face in preventing contraband from entering prisons.

They commended officers who detected the attempt before the items reached inmates.

The Malawi Prison Service believes that the presence of unauthorized objects in prisons threatens rehabilitation efforts. Meke stated that inmates need a controlled and safe environment that supports their reform and reintegration.

He added that the institution is working hand in hand with security agencies and communities to identify and stop smuggling networks. Collaboration, he said, is essential in curbing the growing trend.

The Prison Service has also encouraged the public to refrain from assisting inmates in accessing illegal items. Officials say citizens must take responsibility for safeguarding correctional facilities and supporting lawful processes.

Meke concluded by assuring the nation that security in prisons will continue to be tightened. He encouraged all stakeholders to cooperate in ensuring that Malawi’s prisons remain secure and free from contraband.
