Chakwera Vows to Lead MCP Back to Power by 2030

By Rahim Abdul
President Lazarus Chakwera has reaffirmed his dedication to steering the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) toward a political resurgence, declaring that he remains fully committed to guiding the party back into government by the year 2030.
Speaking at his first press briefing since his defeat in the September 16 election, Chakwera adopted a tone of determination and revival. He acknowledged that the loss was difficult to accept, but insisted that it has only strengthened his resolve to rebuild the party from the ground up.

Chakwera told supporters that setbacks should not be seen as the end but as a moment to reorganize and refocus.
He stressed that the MCP must rise from the disappointment and use it as fuel for a renewed political journey.
The former president assured the MCP faithful that he still has the energy and vision to lead. He boldly stated, “As long as I am your president, I will make sure we get back into government,” signaling an unwavering commitment to reclaiming political ground.
He outlined a long-term strategy aimed at repositioning the MCP as a strong and competitive force ahead of future elections, including the 2030 national polls.
Chakwera further urged party members to embrace unity, stressing that internal divisions only weaken their collective strength. He reminded them that rebuilding the MCP requires cooperation, discipline and shared purpose.
He called on young people within the party to remain active, noting that their involvement will be crucial in reshaping the MCP’s identity and pushing for modernization.
Chakwera also appealed to veteran members to use their experience and wisdom to mentor upcoming leaders, creating a balanced and inclusive leadership pipeline.
The briefing ended with a message of hope and resilience. Chakwera assured supporters that the journey ahead may be tough, but with determination and unity, the MCP can reclaim its place in Malawi’s political landscape.
