Government rolls out 2025/26 lean season food support initiative in Northern Malawi*

Scheme targets food security for vulnerable families in Mzimba, launched at Kavitowe Primary School



Vice President Jane Ansah officially launched the 2025/26 Lean Season Food Support Initiative in the Northern Region on Friday, signaling the government’s commitment to assisting households facing seasonal food shortages.

The launch, held at Kavitowe Primary School in Mzimba, brought together local leaders and community members who witnessed the government outline its plan to safeguard vulnerable families during the lean season.

Ansah highlighted the need for timely intervention, noting that the programme aims to ensure affected communities have access to adequate food supplies and resources during periods of scarcity.

Managed under the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), the initiative is part of a wider government effort to strengthen resilience, improve food security, and minimize the hardships caused by seasonal hunger.

Attendees expressed optimism that the programme would reach the intended beneficiaries promptly, stabilizing households and supporting livelihoods in the region.

The rollout in the Northern Region marks the beginning of coordinated efforts to deliver food aid and other essential support to communities most at risk, reinforcing the government’s commitment to protecting its citizens during critical times.
