SADC Mission Declares Tanzania’s 2025 General Elections Undemocratic

By Wadza Botomani
The Head of the Southern African Development Community Electoral Observation Mission to Tanzania’s October 29, 2025 General Elections, Richard Msowoya, has stated that the polls failed to meet the regional body’s standards for democratic elections. Issuing a preliminary statement, Msowoya declared that the overall conduct of the election fell short of the requirements outlined in the SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections.
Msowoya reported that the mission’s observers found voters in most areas were unable to freely express their democratic will. The findings reflect significant concerns over the fairness and transparency of the electoral process. He urged all Tanzanians to resolve any disputes through established legal channels and to avoid violence or threats.

Appointed by Malawi’s President Peter Mutharika, Msowoya reiterated the mission’s commitment to supporting democratic practices in the region. He confirmed that a final and comprehensive report will be issued within 30 days of the preliminary statement, in accordance with SADC guidelines.
