Meet Madalitso Chidumu Baloyi, the newly appointed Minister of Health and Sanitation for Malawi, a leader whose diverse professional background has prepared her for the immense challenges of this crucial cabinet role. Her appointment comes after her successful election as an independent member of parliament for Mzimba Kafukule Constituency.
Baloyi’s career before politics was extensive and deeply rooted in public service and health administration, providing a strong foundation for her new position. Her curriculum vitae reveals a professional journey marked by dedication and a steady ascent through various sectors.
Her past roles include serving as a Clinical Officer at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, where her medical career began on the front lines of patient care. She later transitioned into public health as a District Health Coordinator for the Ministry of Health, managing regional health initiatives. Her expertise was further recognized when she acted as a National Coordinator for Malaria Control Programs, overseeing strategic efforts to combat the disease.

Baloyi also gained invaluable experience as a Health Systems Consultant for the World Health Organization, providing technical advice on strengthening Malawi’s healthcare infrastructure. For a period, she dedicated her skills to maternal health as the Program Manager for a national Safe Motherhood initiative.
Beyond direct health roles, she served as a Lecturer in Community Health at the University of Malawi, shaping the next generation of medical professionals. Her managerial skills were honed as the Deputy Director of Preventive Health Services, a role that involved policy planning and implementation. She also contributed to the non-profit sector as the Executive Director of a local health advocacy NGO focused on HIV/AIDS awareness.
Earlier in her career, she worked as a Medical Researcher on a major epidemiological study tracking non-communicable diseases. Furthermore, her understanding of governance was sharpened during a tenure as a Senior Health Advisor to a parliamentary committee, a role that directly interfaces with the legislative process.
This impressive and varied career, spanning clinical practice, national program coordination, international consultancy, and academic instruction, provides her with a unique and comprehensive perspective on the health sector. She is not new to the complexities of healthcare delivery, from the grassroots level to the highest echelons of policy-making. As minister, she immediately assumes responsibility for a ministry actively battling infectious diseases like cholera and mpox, while also managing routine immunization and public health campaigns. Her immediate in-tray includes overseeing the upcoming national mass drug administration for Bilharzia.
With her direct experience in both the clinical and administrative facets of healthcare, Madalitso Baloyi brings a well-rounded and deeply informed leadership to one of Malawi’s most vital ministries, offering a sense of confident expectation for the road ahead.
