Flames of Injustice Doused: Elderly Woman’s Miraculous Escape from Nsanje Mob

By Rahim Abdul
Police in Nsanje District have rescued an elderly woman from an angry mob that was moments away from setting her on fire after accusing her of practicing witchcraft.
The shocking incident occurred in the early hours of October 17, 2025, in Chomboto Village, under Traditional Authority Mlolo.
According to the police, officers from Fatima Police Unit responded swiftly to a distress call from community members who reported that a woman, believed to be between 60 and 70 years old, had been found naked and surrounded by a violent crowd.

Upon arrival, officers found the woman in a vulnerable condition as the mob prepared to execute her.
“The officers managed to disperse the crowd and safely escorted the woman to the police unit, where she is now under protection,” said Constable Jabulani Ng’oma, Nsanje Police Deputy Public Relations Officer.
Police say the woman, who appears to be of African descent, has not yet been identified. Her place of origin remains unknown as she is showing signs of communication difficulties, making it difficult for officers to gather details about her background or family members.
“We are appealing to members of the public who may recognize this woman to come forward and assist us in identifying her and tracing her relatives,” Ng’oma added.
The incident has reignited discussions on witchcraft-related violence and mob justice in Malawi, particularly against elderly people who are often targeted under such accusations. Authorities have repeatedly condemned these acts, urging communities to report suspicions to the police instead of taking the law into their own hands.
Human rights organizations have also raised concern over the continued targeting of elderly women accused of witchcraft, noting that many cases go unreported and often end in fatalities before police can intervene.
Social welfare officers in Nsanje are reportedly working closely with the police to provide counseling and temporary shelter for the rescued woman as efforts continue to locate her relatives or home district.
Meanwhile, police have warned the public that mob justice is a serious criminal offense punishable by law.
“Anyone found taking part in mob violence will face the full force of the law. We urge all citizens to respect human rights and treat every person with dignity,” emphasized Ng’oma.
Members of the public with any information about the woman’s identity have been urged to contact Fatima Police Unit or the nearest police station.
