Gospel musician Lloyd Phiri opens up about his life, faith, and family

By Burnett Munthali
Gospel musician Lloyd Phiri recently took to social media to share an intimate glimpse into his personal life.
He addressed a few people who had been asking him sincere questions about his background and experiences.
Phiri revealed that he is 45 years old and received salvation, becoming born again, in 1997 at the age of 17.
He recalled that when the gift of singing came to him, he released his first album in 1999.
The album was widely loved, and the song “Afuna Ulape” became number one nationwide in the MBC Entertainers of the Year competition.

He noted that at the time, singers were not actively campaigning for votes; awards were earned purely on merit.
Throughout his career, Phiri has released a total of seven studio albums, with two additional albums recorded live on stage.
Speaking about his family, he shared that he first married in 2006 at the age of 26, but the marriage ended in 2012/2013.
From that marriage, he has a son named Junior.
Since 2013, Phiri has been single, dedicating his time to prayer, seeking guidance from God, and reflecting on life’s events.
During these nine years, he refrained from releasing albums or organizing shows, instead focusing on recording songs for other artists in the studio.
He explained that he prefers a mostly indoor life, devoted to Bible study, prayer, and studio sound engineering.
After these years of reflection and dedication, he remarried Elinat Phiri on 15th October 2022 in Lilongwe.
Together, they have a daughter named Amanda Happiness Phiri, who is currently two years and one month old.
Phiri reflected on the many challenges and painful experiences he has faced, emphasizing that his continued faith and dedication to service have kept him strong.
He lamented the spread of false rumors, such as claims that he has been married multiple times or engaged in substance abuse, which he said can be hurtful.
Phiri urged people to seek information directly from him rather than believing unfounded stories.
He concluded his post by asking anyone with questions to approach him personally while he is still alive.
