Enoch Chihana unshaken as Malawi awaits his swearing-in as Second Vice President

By Burnett Munthali
Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) president, Enock Chihana, has declared that he is not losing sleep over his pending swearing-in as the Second Vice President of the Republic of Malawi.
In recent days, questions have emerged from various quarters regarding the delay in Chihana’s formal assumption of office.
This comes after President Peter Mutharika appointed and swore in a partial cabinet consisting of three ministers, sparking curiosity about when the remaining appointments, including Chihana’s, would be finalized.

However, MIJ Online has reported that Chihana’s swearing-in is likely to coincide with the unveiling of a full cabinet, which is expected to be announced in the coming days.
Maurice Munthali, the spokesperson for Chihana, confirmed that the Office of the President and Cabinet is currently handling the administrative processes necessary to ensure a smooth transition.
Munthali emphasized that there is no cause for alarm, explaining that the procedure is being carefully managed to maintain government stability and institutional order.
He further disclosed that the official appointment of the remaining cabinet ministers would precede the swearing-in ceremony of the Second Vice President.
According to Munthali, the ceremony could take place as early as this weekend or early next week, depending on the completion of the final preparations.
In his remarks, Munthali urged AFORD supporters and sympathisers to remain patient and to focus their attention on nation-building rather than on political speculation.
He emphasized that the alliance between the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and AFORD was built on principles of collaboration and service to the Malawian people.
Ahead of the October 16th general elections, the two parties agreed on a power-sharing arrangement that distributed the three constitutional presidential slots as follows: Peter Mutharika as President, Jane Ansah as Vice President, and Enock Chihana as Second Vice President.
This historic agreement marked a new chapter in Malawi’s political landscape, highlighting the spirit of cooperation among key political players in pursuit of national unity and stability.
With his calm demeanor and confidence in the process, Chihana continues to project the image of a steady statesman, committed to upholding democratic values and contributing to the country’s governance.
As the nation awaits the full cabinet announcement, anticipation grows for Chihana’s formal entry into office — a moment that will officially cement AFORD’s place within Malawi’s new governing alliance.
