By Chisomo Phiri
The European Union (EU) has applauded the ongoing digital transformation in Malawi’s justice sector, describing it as a vital step away from inefficient paper-based systems.
EU Head of Delegation George Dura made the remarks in Lilongwe on Tuesday during the official launch of a new Financial Accounting System and a Document Repository System, both funded under the Chilungamo II Programme.

As part of the initiative, the EU also handed over a fleet of vehicles and motorcycles worth K1.2 billion to key justice institutions.
Dura noted that the new financial platform is already improving financial management, reporting, and data-driven decision-making within the sector.
On his part,Deputy Chief Justice Lovemore Chikopa, stressed that the vehicles, motorcycles, and digital systems are not just tools of convenience but critical enablers of justice.
“They will enhance our capacity to reach communities in remote areas, strengthen accountability in resource management, and improve how information is stored, accessed, and shared,” he said.
In his remarks,Minister of Justice Titus Mvalo said prison decongestion remains a priority under the programme.
He disclosed that guidelines for implementing the new Prisons Act are currently being developed with technical support from Chilungamo II.
