President Chakwera Champions Cultural Unity at Ngoni Umhlangano

President Lazarus Chakwera has emphasized the role of cultural preservation in fostering national unity. He made these remarks while attending the annual Maseko Ngoni cultural gathering, known as Umhlangano, at Nkolimbo Village in Ntcheu.

President Chakwera stated that the spirit of shared responsibility demonstrated by the Maseko Ngoni is crucial for the country’s development. He said cultural events like Umhlangano provide a platform for intercultural exchange, bringing people of different cultures and backgrounds together.

Chakwera with Inkosi Gomani

The President commended Inkosi Ya Makosi Gomani V for his visionary leadership in promoting culture, environmental conservation, and education. He also reiterated that the challenges of hunger, disease, and envy, as mentioned in the national anthem, remain major issues for Malawi.

In his remarks, Paramount Chief Gomani V called for unity among all cultures in the country, stating that the event is an important heritage for sharing cultural values and connecting with the spirits of their forefathers. He emphasized that culture is vital for understanding one’s origins and future direction.

The chairperson of the Maseko Ngoni heritage, Inkosi Makwangwala, thanked the President for attending and highlighted the 2025 theme of “Unity is Strength.” The ceremony featured various cultural dances, including Ingoma and Uyeni, and drew Ngoni people from across the country and abroad.

Earlier in the day, Gomani V led a sacrificial ceremony known as Mkhwisulo at the Gomani Chikuse 1 National Monument.
