Malawi’s First Lady, Monica Chakwera, has officially opened the Beit Cure International Hospital Surgical Centre in Blantyre, hailing it as a “fountain of healing” that embodies the power of love in action.

During the ceremony, Chakwera emphasized that the new facility serves as living proof that compassionate action leads to restoration.

This milestone marks a significant boost to the hospital’s capacity to provide life-changing surgeries for children with disabilities.

The upgraded surgical centre is expected to increase the number of surgeries performed annually from 2,300 to 2,900, a crucial step in addressing the previously daunting waiting list of up to three months.

According to Rhoda Jura Kriek, Executive Director of Beit Cure Children’s Hospital Malawi, the hospital will now benefit from having four surgeons, up from two prior to the upgrade.

This expansion will undoubtedly alleviate the burden on families seeking surgical care for their children.

With 23 years of dedicated service in Malawi, Beit Cure Children’s Hospital has an impressive track record, having successfully performed over 36,000 surgeries.

The hospital’s mission aligns with the broader goals of CURE International, a global nonprofit network that provides compassionate, gospel-centered surgical care to children with treatable disabilities.

By supporting local healthcare systems and ministering to the spiritual needs of patients and their families, Beit Cure Children’s Hospital embodies a holistic approach to healing.

First Lady Chakwera’s presence at the opening ceremony underscores the importance of this facility in the country’s healthcare landscape.

The Beit Cure International Hospital Surgical Centre not only represents a beacon of hope for families in Malawi but also serves as a testament to the power of collaborative efforts in advancing healthcare outcomes.

The hospital’s team, led by Executive Director Dr. Rhoda Kriek, is poised to make a profound impact on the lives of countless children. Dr. Kriek, who has been at the helm since January 2025, brings a wealth of experience and passion to her role.

Her commitment to the hospital’s mission is shared by the dedicated medical team, including Dr. Samuel Maina, Medical Director, and other skilled professionals who work tirelessly to provide high-quality surgical care.

As Malawi continues to navigate the challenges of healthcare delivery, the Beit Cure International Hospital Surgical Centre stands as a shining example of what can be achieved through love, compassion, and action.
