President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has described the visit of Botswana President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko as a historic milestone in Malawi’s journey toward a brighter future. The remarks were made during a state banquet hosted at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe on Saturday evening.
President Boko, who is on a three-day state visit, will serve as the guest of honor at Malawi’s 61st Independence Anniversary celebrations on Sunday at Bingu National Stadium. Chakwera emphasized the significance of the visit, calling it a moment for the history books.

President Chakwera commended Boko as a visionary, democrat, and Pan-Africanist leader who aligns with Malawi’s values of democracy, good governance, and development. He highlighted the longstanding friendship between Malawi and Botswana, dating back to 1966 when both nations gained independence.
Chakwera lauded Botswana’s progress under Boko’s leadership, particularly the launch of the country’s first satellite into space within six months of his presidency. He described Boko as a forward-thinking leader committed to advancing Africa’s future.
In his address, President Boko reflected on the challenges of democracy, citing Malawi as an example of resilience and justice. He praised Malawi’s military and judiciary for upholding the people’s will during a contested election, calling their actions a testament to the democratic spirit that must be safeguarded.
