High number of presidential aspirants signals lost trust in current administration

By Jones Gadama
The high number of presidential aspirants ahead of the September 16 elections has sparked debate, with some experts attributing it to a lost trust in the current administration.
According to the Malawi Electoral Commission, 13 presidential aspirants have shown interest in contesting the upcoming elections.
Political expert George Phiri believes that the large number of aspirants is a result of perceived failures by the current administration, which has prompted individuals to run for the top seat to address these challenges.

However, Phiri notes that this does not directly impact the 50+1 law, which requires a presidential candidate to garner more than 50% of the total votes cast to win in the first round.
Phiri is optimistic that some of the aspirants have a chance of meeting the 50+1 threshold, indicating a competitive election landscape.
