A brother remembered: Mutharika mourns the passing of President Edgar Chagwa Lungu

By Burnett Munthali
Former President of Malawi, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, has expressed profound sorrow following the passing of former Zambian former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu.
Writing on his official Facebook page, Mutharika described the news as “sad” and said it came to him with a “heavy heart.”
In his heartfelt message, Mutharika referred to Lungu not merely as a colleague, but as a dear friend and brother, whose life was marked by dignity, humility, and an unwavering commitment to public service.

He recalled the close cooperation the two leaders shared during their respective presidencies, particularly in addressing matters of bilateral and multilateral importance between Malawi and Zambia.
Mutharika praised Lungu’s wisdom and steady leadership, saying he was a source of valuable counsel and a dedicated servant to the people of Zambia.
As a fellow lawyer, Mutharika said he deeply admired President Lungu’s respect for the rule of law and his profound understanding of justice and governance.
Beyond politics and law, Mutharika reflected on the personal qualities that defined his friendship with Lungu — his warmth, humour, and unwavering loyalty.
In conveying his condolences, the former Malawian leader spoke on behalf of the Democratic Progressive Party, his family, and in his personal capacity, offering heartfelt sympathy to Lungu’s family.
He also extended condolences to the current President of Zambia, His Excellency Hakainde Hichilema, the government and people of Zambia, and all who are mourning the loss of a great African statesman.
Prof. Mutharika closed his tribute by praying for the eternal peace of President Lungu’s soul and expressed hope that his legacy would continue to inspire generations across the African continent.
President Edgar Chagwa Lungu served as the sixth president of the Republic of Zambia, and his death has sent waves of grief across the region and beyond.
His passing marks the end of a significant era in Zambian politics, but as Prof. Mutharika notes, his legacy will endure in the hearts of those who cherish democracy, justice, and pan-African unity.
