Cameroon President Paul Biya has spent more than 45 days outside his country, raising fresh questions over his health and leadership as the government remains silent on when he will return.
Biya, who is 93 years old, reportedly left Cameroon in early June for what officials described as a private visit to Europe. However, authorities have not disclosed his exact location or the purpose of his extended stay.
The prolonged absence has prompted opposition political parties to demand that the government provide a clear update on the president’s whereabouts and health, arguing that citizens have the right to know who is effectively running the country.
Some opposition leaders have also questioned the government’s continued silence, saying the lack of transparency has fuelled speculation over Biya’s ability to continue leading the Central African nation

Despite growing public concern, the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) has continued holding party meetings without directly addressing the president’s health or expected return to Cameroon.
Government officials have previously dismissed reports suggesting that Biya is seriously ill, maintaining that he remains in charge of state affairs even while abroad.
Biya has been President of Cameroon since 1982, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving heads of state after spending 43 years in power.
His long rule has often attracted criticism from opposition groups and civil society organisations, which have repeatedly called for political reforms and greater transparency in governance.
The uncertainty surrounding his absence has also reignited debate over succession plans, especially as Cameroon currently has no vice president to immediately assume presidential responsibilities if needed.
As pressure continues to mount, many Cameroonians and political observers are waiting for the government to provide an official update on President Biya’s condition and his expected return to the country.
